The design of "Out of Print"
I am going to do a series of Post-Mortems on this game, kind of laying out all the different stuff I did and where I drew inspirations from.
The design of this game came about because I gave myself some problems and tried to figure out a way to solve them. I knew i wanted to accomplish 3 things going into this game.
- Mini zine designed to look like a book
- cozy solo game that was about journaling.
- wanted to use a d6 instead of a deck of cards.
when I designed my first TTRPG Kobold KrewI loved the idea of the Minizine as a book. I have also been thinking about writing mini comics in that vein now so that sparked a lot of ideas of conceptually thinking of the entire zine as an art piece. This also came from seeing some of the physical copies of other solo games like thousand year old vampire. This let me down to a lot of testing to see what I could pull off and how good I could get this to look. I went through about 4 iterations just to decide on the color of the book. I did almost release a multipage PDF of the book in several different colors. I still may do that in the future if people would want something like that.
I wanted to use this as an experiment into dipping my toe into solo RPG. I think the idea of them as writing prompts you weave through while getting randomized combinations from dice or cards can lead to a lot of creativity. I had also been thinking about a Journal/Drawing game that was a travelouge across a fantasy realm (This actually started as a book seller ironically). As I tested this I noticed the more interesting thing was interacting with the customers, but It was rare that I could think of a way to meet the same traveler twice. This led me to flip it and bring the customers to you, by making for a sedentary book shop. I realized that the fantasy part was really like a hat on a hat at this point and not really needed, so I scrapped that for standard store, but did include an animal vibe to it because I thought that still made it fun.
lastly I wanted a D6 cause I just like rolling dice, and I think its more interesting and easier then using a deck of cards. If I had gone with a larger format, like perhaps a single sheet front and back I might have gone with something more complicated. (Maybe even dropping it to 4 residents and having each suit reference a specific one. I saw the format of the Thousand year old vampire and the moving down a list reminded me of the to do lists I often use at work, so that made me think of it that way.
Well I think that's everything for now. I might dip into my artistic process next time.
