Wonderous Items released


After a long Hiatus, I can finally release the next book in the Kobold Krew Series. This is one that is all about Items. I dreamed up a lot of these items while I was working on the MurkMire setting. I could not fit them into that book in its page layout and still have enough room to give decent explanations. I had so many that I decided to create a new book just for Wonderous Items.

As for the design of the items. I tried really hard to get them to work in the spirit of the game. I read a lot of different Tunnel Goon hacks that used magic systems as I tried to figure out a way to make them work and have a good chance of creating fun situations, with backfiring being narratively interesting. I ended with a 2D6 system similar to all Action Rolls in the game. I thought this would be best as it slides right in with any other roll the player might do.

So an example my favorite is the Magical Whistle. It has a DS of 8 and uses the Know stat. So if the player wants to use the Magical Whistle they roll 2D6 and add their Know stat. If the player ends with an 8 or higher, the item is used successfully. With a successful roll, they summon a spectral dog, that can help them. It stays and helps for a number of minutes equal to the lower of the two dice rolled. This could maybe help in combat, tracking something, fetching something etc. However, if the player fails the roll, a cat is summoned. the cat is a useless NPC that the Referee can have some creative fun with. maybe the cat scratches a player, or starts knocking bottles of shelves. I know my cat loves to just scream, which would not be helpful in a stealth mission. Now the next time a player uses the Magical Whistle, if they have not rested, its a DS 10. Its not impossible, but will be a lot harder to succeed.
